Dairy is one of the top allergens affecting over half of the world population.  The lactose in milk and milk based products does not sit well with many people.  After just one glass of milk or cheese serving you’ll experience stomach cramping, gurgling noises, irregular bowel movement (diarrhea/ constipation), among other symptoms that we do not directly associate with food sensitivities and allergies.  Lactose intolerance and dairy allergy are two different things, although those who are lactose intolerant are more likely to avoid all dairy, mostly as a safety measure. 

What is lactose intolerance? 

Lactose intolerace is inability to fully digest the sugar in milk, lactose.  In order to digest lactose correctly you need the lactase enzymes, which are in the gut and in milk before it is processed.  A lactose malabsorption happens when you do not have enough lactase enzymes in your intestinal tract to digest lactose properly.

A dairy allergy is less common, it affects about 3% of the population.  The symptoms of an allergy are hives, bloody stools, and even trouble breathing after consuming milk.  Anaphylaxis is a life threatening reaction where the airways swell and make it hard to breathe.

 

A dairy free diet can be easy to follow for everybody regardless of the reason for eliminating milk products.  Reading labels and getting in the kitchen make enjoying food you can happily tolerate a breeze!
